Health and Safety Policy

At Obsidian Cheer and Dance we regard health and safety with the highest importance, and aim to provide and maintain a safe and healthy environment for working, training, equipment and procedures for all staff, athletes, parents, guardians and visitors. At Obsidian Cheer and Dance we recognise the responsibility we have to our staff and customers under the legalisations of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, the Management Regulations 1999, RIDDOR 2013 and COSHH 2002.

Obsidian Cheer and Dance are committed to keeping employees, athletes, parents, guardians and visitors safe and minimise as many incidents and accidents as possible. We have put in place the following procedures to keep to our commitment:

  • We have appointed a lead in health and safety and first aid, Mollie Taylor (Co-Owner)

  • All members must fill out a registration form with emergency contact details and any medical history or conditions, a copy will always be kept with the coach on their register.

  • It is a parent or guardian's responsibility to inform any changes to medical information or emergency details of their child/children

  • All employees will have training in health and safety; including fire safety, manual handling (i.e. supporting children in gymnastics) and level 3 first aid.

  • A risk assessments will be completed for every new venue or event, any concerns will be reported to our health and safety lead immediately.

  • A first aid box will always be with the lead coach.

  • All accidents and incidents must be reported and recorded, a record must be given to the parent or guardian at collection if it involved a child

  • A qualified first aider is required at the venue at all times - all coaches are first aid trained.

  • Permission must be asked first to administer first aid on a child, this will be requested in the registration form

  • In a case of emergency, we will provide first aid without permission and call emergency services if necessary, the parent or guardian will be informed of the incident beforehand.

  • All members are to be made aware of the risks of cheerleading and dance, and that injuries can happen at any point due to them being an active sport. Obsidian Cheer and Dance accepts no responsibility of injuries sustained unless it is due to a coaches negligence

  • Any existing injuries or health considerations must be reported to the head coach before a class by either the athlete or parent/guardian

  • Jewellery is not permitted during training - children will be asked to remove jewellery in class if this is not done beforehand.

  • No children will be able to leave the venue (i.e. walk home alone) without a parent or guardian unless this has been confirmed with a coach prior to the class, preferably in writing

  • All cleaning products will be stored safely and in accordance with COSHH

  • Staffing levels are kept at an appropriate level regarding numbers and the risks within the class. There will always be a ratio of 6:1
